Journey To Chile
[2014]
In 2014, I set off on a trip to the North of Chile. I met local families who accompanied me to discover Antofagasta and the Atacama desert. Right in the middle of the desert I saw a carved hand, more than eleven meters high, coming out of the sand. It is a monument dedicated to the disappeared, victims of the Pinochet dictatorship.
Until that moment, I had appreciated the magic and mystery of Chile, I had been fascinated by the Salitrere, cities that sprang up in the nineteenth century near the refineries and mines that housed the families of the workers. But after seeing that hand I became aware of a drama and I could no longer enclose it in a corner of my mind. So I continued the journey with different eyes; every place photographed from then on took on a metaphorical value. Journey to Chile introduces ‘Never again the fog in the desert’.
